
Softball Splits Day Two of the Blues City Classic

Brooke Johnson goes 5-for-7 in two games on Saturday
MEMPHIS, TENN. - DePaul softball split two games on Saturday, falling 4-3 to SIUE and defeating Tennessee Tech, 10-5.Â
Brooke Johnson had an impressive offensive outing, going 2-for-3 with a triple, home run and two RBIs against SIUE (5-6) and 3-for-4 against Tennessee Tech with another home run and two RBIs.
Senior Riley Pool went 2-for-3 against Tennessee Tech with a double and three RBIs. Freshman Brooke Cwick went 2-for-4 against the Cougars with two doubles while junior Carly Alvers went 2-for-3 with two doubles.Â
DePaul (2-11) put up a season-high in runs, scoring 10 against Tennessee Tech (5-2) on 10 hits.Â
Katey Pierce (0-4) earned the start against SIUE, going six innings while giving up eight hits but only one earned run. Brenna Smith (1-0) got the nod against Tennessee Tech, pitching a complete game and tallying five strikeouts.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 - SIUE 4, DePaul 3
A triple play from the Blue Demons defense got the team out of a first inning attempt by the Cougars and kept the game knotted, 0-0. The defense showed back up in the top of the second, turning a double play.
The Blue Demons got on the board in the fourth inning, as Johnson hit her first triple of the season and a sacrifice fly from Pool plated the run. In the sixth, Cwick knocked a leadoff double to left and Johnson followed up with a home run to left to extend the lead, 3-2.Â
SIUE scored four runs in the top of the seventh off of two singles and an error. The Blue Demons looked to respond with Cwick hitting her second double of the day, but the team was unable to even the score.
Game 2 - Tennessee Tech 5, DePaul 10
The Blue Demons began the game with the bases loaded, as Talbot reached on an error, Johnson singled and Pool was walked. Cosgrove hit a single and advanced to second on the throw, sending Talbot and Johnson home to take a 2-0 lead.Â
Cwick notched a leadoff single in the third, followed by a walk to Talbot and a single from Johnson to load the bases for a second time. Pool knocked a double to left, scoring all three baserunners to take a 5-0 lead. Cosgrove recorded a single, moving Pool to third. Pool crossed home on a sacrifice fly from Alvers, extending the lead to 6-0. Jacobs was next to the plate, putting down a bunt single and moving Cosgrove to third base to put runners on the corners. Rodriguez grounded out to short but recorded an RBI as Cosgrove crossed home to put DePaul up 7-0.
Tennessee Tech responded in the fourth inning with a single and a double, allowing them to score their first run, 1-7. The Golden Eagles had two singles and a walk in the sixth inning, loading the bases. Tennessee Tech then hit a home run to break into DePaul's lead, 7-5.
Talbot started off the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff single while Johnson followed behind with a two run shot to center, extending DePaul's lead, 9-5. Pool reached on an error and Alvers' second sacrifice fly of the afternoon plated Pool to push the lead, 10-5.
