Blue Demons record five hits in series finale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - DePaul softball fell in six innings to Providence, 2-10, Sunday afternoon.

DePaul (8-29, 3-12 BIG EAST) tallied five hits from five different players as Carly Alvers and Bibianna Rodriguez recorded the runs for the Blue Demons. Senior Payton Viles made her first start in the field, getting the nod at second base.

Sophomore Bella Nigey started the game in the circle, throwing 3.0 innings while giving up five runs on five hits and totaling three strikeouts. Katey Pierce appeared in relief, going 2.2 innings with five runs on eight hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Alvers knocked a base hit up the middle in the second inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Viles. Rodriguez followed up with a double down the left field line to send Alvers home and give DePaul the lead, 1-0. Morgan Rogers laid down a bunt and was able to reach second on a Providence (17-18, 8-10 BIG EAST) error, allowing Rodriguez to cross home and take a 2-0 lead.

The Friars responded in the bottom of the second with a home run to tie the game, 2-2. Providence took the lead in the third inning and did not look back.

DePaul was able to get base runners aboard in the fifth and sixth innings, as Ava Paganis and Baylee Cosgrove tallied singles but were unable to cross home.

UP NEXT
DePaul returns to Cacciatore Stadium for their final homestand of the season. The Blue Demons will host Villanova on April 19-21 with coverage on BIG EAST Digital Network and FloSoftball.
