Five Blue Demons recognized on Senior Day at Cacciatore Stadium
CHICAGO - DePaul softball fell to Villanova 8-3, Sunday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the Blue Demons recognized five seniors for their contribution and impact on the DePaul softball program. Among those recognized were: Brooke Johnson, Riley Pool, Ariana Rodriguez, Brenna Smith and Payton Viles.
The Blue Demons saw three players record multiple hits in the game, as Viles, Ava Paganis and Lydia Ettema all tallied two hits on the day. Ettema knocked her first career home run to left center during the fourth inning.
Smith, Katey Pierce and Abbey Pochie all saw time in the circle for the Blue Demons on Sunday. Smith gave up one hit while Pierce went 2.0 innings with five hit and five runs. Abbey Pochie ended the game in the circle, throwing 5.0 innings and giving up only two runs on six hits while adding three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Villanova (25-18, 16-2 BIG EAST) jumped out to an 8-0 lead halfway through the fourth inning.
DePaul (8-32, 3-15 BIG EAST) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ettema hit a home run to left center to cut into the lead, 8-1.
The Blue Demons got their offense going in the sixth inning. Paganis and A. Rodriguez earned walks to take first and second base while a single to right field from Viles sent Paganis home to score a DePaul run, 8-2. Brooke Cwick appeared as a pinch hitter and drew a walk to load the bases. The Wildcats walked Johnson to score DePaul's third run of the afternoon, 8-3.
DePaul looked to battle back with a single from Ettema in the seventh, but were unable to plate any more runs.
UP NEXT
DePaul returns to Cacciatore Stadium for their final home game of the season. The Blue Demons will host Illinois on Tuesday, April 23 with coverage on Marquee Sports Network.
