Schiene plans to step away from collegiate coaching at the conclusion of the season
CHICAGO – The upcoming 2024-25 DePaul golf season will be the final for head coach, Marty Schiene, announced Monday morning. Schiene, a long-time figure in the world of Chicago golf, plans to step away from college athletics and pursue other opportunities after this season. DePaul will immediately begin a national search for its next head coach.
"Marty Scheine has been an outstanding leader and mentor for our men's golf team over the past nine years," said Vice President and Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy. "His teaching ability and golf experience have elevated our program. We are deeply grateful for his contributions and wish him and his wife Anita the very best as he steps away from collegiate coaching next summer. Marty will always be a cherished member of the Blue Demon family."
The 2024-25 season will be Schiene's eighth as the head coach, and ninth in the program after he served as an assistant coach during the 2016-17 season. During Schiene's tenure, the Blue Demons posted a pair of top three finishes at the BIG EAST Championship. Most recently in 2024, under Schiene's tutelage, Artemiy Yalovenko finished in third place at the BIG EAST Tournament. Yalovenko's finish marked the second-best ever by a Blue Demon and best in Schiene's time at DePaul.
"I am incredibly grateful for my team leading the DePaul golf program" said Scheine. "Thank you to DeWayne Peevy and DePaul Athletics for providing me this opportunity over the last several years."
Prior to DePaul, Schiene spent a year at Loyola Chicago where he helped the Ramblers women's golf team to a program-best sixth place finish at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. Schiene was also previously the head men's golf coach at Chicago State for five seasons where the program saw great success under his leadership, including a 42-stroke improvement in his first season.
Before he joined the collegiate coaching ranks, Schiene competed for 15 years on the Canadian, South African, Asian and Australian Tours. He was a member of the PGA Tour in 1993. He competed in four U.S. Opens and won the Illinois Open three times. He also won the 1997 Nevada Open and took home the Dunes Invitational title twice.
