Four Blue Demons reach double-digit scoring
MILWAUKEE – There was a last minute surge by the DePaul men's basketball team, but the Blue Demons couldn't overcome Marquette's second half lead as the Golden Eagles won 68-58 Tuesday evening. Despite being down as much as 16 in the second half, DePaul came within eight points in the final minutes of the game.
CJ Gunn led DePaul with 14 points, followed closely by 13 from Isaiah Rivera on 5-of-10 shooting. NJ Benson led the team with eight rebounds before exiting with an injury as a total of five DePaul players registered 5+ rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Marquette (19-6, 10-4 BIG EAST) opened the game to an early lead, before DePaul (11-13, 2-11 BIG EAST) responded with back-to-back jumpers from Gunn and David Thomas. A transition dunk by Gunn made it a two-point, 18-16 game.
Marquette took a 24-18 lead with a little under seven minutes left to play in the first half. DePaul found its rhythm from the three-point line, hitting a pair back-to-back from Thomas and Rivera to pull within two, 34-32. Marquette had an offensive tip in by Kam Jones before then forcing a DePaul turnover for what looked like would be the final shot of the half. However, Blocker stole the inbound pass and hit a fadeaway at the buzzer to make it a two-point game.
Coming out of halftime, Gunn immediately tied the game with a layup for the first tie since the opening minutes. DePaul would never be able to take the lead as it hovered around a four-point game before Marquette took its largest lead of the game on a 20-4 run. DePaul made a late push on three-straight layups to pull within eight, but ultimately would fall to the home Golden Eagles.
