DePaul secures five first-place finishes at home meet
CHICAGO – DePaul track and field concluded its third annual Blue Demon Alumni Classic Saturday night, highlighted by junior jumper Jaiah Hopf securing a school record in the triple jump. First-place finishes were also recorded by Darius Brown, John Bush, Dominic Cole, Hopf, and Sade Miller. A night that celebrated both competition and achievement, the meet included a ceremony recognizing 26 graduating student-athletes and a ring presentation for Team USA Paralympic gold medalist and DePaul track and field alum Noelle Malkamaki.
"This was a larger alumni meet than we've had in the past, and it was great to attract teams that we don't often see at our meets in Chicago," said head coach Dave Dopek. "Their attendance helped elevate the depth and strength of the competition. Our student-athletes made the most of the opportunity to compete in front of friends and family, leading to many season and personal bests on Saturday. It's always rewarding to see our team have a big day in front of their tremendous support system. This meet will continue to grow, attract new teams and more fans, and serve as an event where our alums can see us perform at a high level.
The men's field events featured a strong showing, with Alex Bernstein securing second place in the weight throw after recording a season-best mark of 20.59m (2nd in BIG EAST, 46th in NCAA). A third-place finish in the shot put belonged to Jaiden Gary, who threw 18.35m, while Thomas Goggin's personal-best 15.11m in the weight throw earned him ninth. In the high jump, Patrick Diakite cleared 1.98m, setting a new personal best to take fifth.
On the women's side, Jaiah Hopf dominated once again, winning the long jump with a mark of 6.01m before setting a meet record in the triple jump at 13.03m. Her performance not only secured the event win but also placed her 1st in the BIG EAST and 27th in the NCAA. A strong showing in the triple jump continued with Eveline Reno, who placed second with a personal-best 12.01m. In the high jump, Reno and Amelia Barrington tied for third after clearing 1.58m.
A first-place finish in the 60m hurdles highlighted the men's track events, as Darius Brown clocked 7.72. Paul Goins followed in second with a personal-best 8.01 (3rd in BIG EAST). In the 60m final, Demetrius Rolle secured second after crossing the line in 6.83, while Dominic Cole recorded a season-best 6.92 to place fifth. Cole later returned to win the 200m in a season-best 21.60, which stands as 3rd in the BIG EAST this season. The 800m saw John Bush claim first, finishing in 1:51.62. Closing out the men's performances, the 4x400m relay team of Brown, Charles Lewis, Bush, and Tyce Smith finished third with a time of 3:16.08 (3rd in BIG EAST).
The women's track events were led by Sade Miller, who secured first place in the 60m after running 7.59. A fifth-place finish in the event went to Nevaeh Lowe, who clocked 7.76. In the 200m, Jetta Mays placed second with a time of 24.75, placing her among the top five in the BIG EAST this season. Claire Dunn and Nadja Moll took second and third in the 400m, finishing in 56.91 and 57.34, respectively. The 800m featured a third-place finish from Sonja Nagle, who ran a personal-best 2:11.60, followed closely by Meghan Dieball in fourth at 2:11.63. In the 3000m, Tessa Roe posted a personal-best 9:31.39 to take third. The Blue Demons wrapped up the day with a first-place finish in the 4x400m relay, as the team of Kayliah Motes, Nagle, Dunn, and Moll clocked 3:47.46 (3rd in BIG EAST).
"The team now moves into the championship portion of the indoor season, with two multi-day meets in a three-week span," said coach Dopek. "They're ready for the step up in competition and energy. A few hard days of training, and we'll be right back at Gately for the Badger Windy City Invitational. We performed at a high level there last year and look to build on the momentum we've been creating."
