Morgan Rogers earns first career home run
Jacksonville, Fla. – DePaul softball (9-8) earned a pair of wins Saturday at the JU Classic, conquering Mount St. Mary's 10-1 in five innings, before defeating the Dolphins, 7-2, in their evening matchup.
The bats were hot for DePaul, who saw their highest single-game run total so far this season, with ten, and highest run total over a day of play, with 17.
Freshman Zoe Levine continued to excel at the plate, adding two hits and four RBI against the Mountaineers, along with an additional hit against the Dolphins. Four RBI marks the most by any Blue Demon in a game this season, and her four multi-hit outings also lead the squad.
Baylee Cosgrove had four hits on the day and drove in two RBI, while sophomore Morgan Rogers tallied three hits, including a two-RBI home run, the first of her career.
Kelly Greene earned the nod for the first game, allowing just three hits and one run, improving her record to 4-5. Bella Nigey took the reins in the evening tilt, totaling just seven hits and two runs allowed in her fifth win of the year.
"Today our team roared back with a vengeance, clinching two impressive wins," said head coach Liz-Bouck Jagielski.
"The hitters were on fire, delivering powerful performances, while our pitching staff dominated the circle, showcasing the strength and determination that defines our squad."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One: DePaul 10, Mount St. Mary's 1 (5 innings)
Mount St Mary's quickly tallied a run, as Lia Festa made it across after a fielder's choice, stolen base, and double from Tristin Koerner.
DePaul responded immediately in the second frame, with a two-RBI single from Levine scoring both Addison Talbot and Lydia Ettema.
The Blue Demons exploded offensively in the next inning, with consecutive hits from Cosgrove and Alvers, and a walk for Ettema loading the bases. Kelly Beaupre would be the first to take advantage, notching an RBI-single, followed by a walk for Talbot to add an additional run. Levine's second hit of the day would bring across pinch runner Alexis Houge and Ettema, but it was Rogers who capped off the scoring with a two-RBI home run, the first of her career, after another base hit from Bibianna Rodriguez.
Game Two: DePaul 7, Jacksonville 2
The Blue Demons continued their momentum into the evening, as Cosgrove and Alvers both notched base hits to begin the game, posting two unearned runs after an error from the Dolphins.
Rogers and Cosgrove registered hits in the second frame, with an RBI-single from Kali Blount scoring Rogers. Nigey would see no traffic on the base paths for the opening three frames, retiring nine batters in order.
The Dolphins then tallied two runs in the fourth after a pair of singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly, but DePaul would not be denied, with Cosgrove adding a two-RBI double to bring Rogers and Ettema across the plate.
Freshman Addi Burdick contributed the final run for the Blue Demons, bringing Ettema home once again.
