Lydia Ettema tallies her third home run of the weekend
CHICAGO – DePaul softball (12-16, 1-8 BIG EAST) fell to the Providence Friars (10-16, 6-3 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon, by a score of 11-2 in five innings.
Sophomore Lydia Ettema continued to excel at the plate, notching her third home run in as many games this weekend to bring home DePaul's two runs.
Bettendorf, Iowa native Bella Nigey earned the nod in the circle, with six runs on four hits in 0.2 innings of work. Freshman Hannah Messer entered in relief, hurling 3.1 innings and allowing five runs on four hits, along with one strikeout. Senior Katey Pierce closed out the Senior Day contest, giving up just one hit. Nigey was tagged with the loss and moves to 6-2 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Friars tallied four runs in the top of the opening frame, led by a pair of singles, pair of Blue Demon errors, and a triple from Rachael Petrarca. They would tack on another duo of runs in the second inning, and two more again in the third.
Petrarca added another double in the fourth to conclude the scoring for Providence.
Freshman Chelsea Parker led off the fourth frame with a single for the Blue Demons, and Ettema tallied her third home run in as many games to bring herself and Parker across the plate to score. The two runs signaled the end of DePaul's scoring, and the Friars took the 11-2 victory in five innings.
