Hannah Messer tallies career-high six strikeouts in loss
CHICAGO- Despite out-hitting the Loyola Chicago Ramblers Tuesday afternoon, DePaul softball fell in a narrow 2-0 decision at Cacciatore Stadium. The Blue Demons move to 12-17 on the season, while Loyola Chicago improves to 6-24.
Both starting pitchers went the distance in the circle, with freshman Hannah Messer logging the first complete game of her career, and a new career-high of six strikeouts. The Wylie, Texas native falls to 0-2 as the pitcher of record.
Fellow freshman Zoe Levine added her sixth double of the year, with Kelly Beaupre, Baylee Cosgrove, and Lydia Ettema notching the other three hits for the Blue Demons.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ramblers registered their first of two runs in the opening frame, after a single from Sierra Sass, a sacrifice bunt from Hailey Wallace, and a DePaul error.
Messer then recorded five of her six strikeouts before the Ramblers could score again, retiring the side in order in frames two through four.
A double from Nat Lesnicki, a stolen base, and a single from Middie Hickey brought the final run of the game around the bases for Loyola Chicago in the top of the sixth inning. Despite three of DePaul's four hits coming in the final two frames, including the double from Levine, they could not bring a runner across the plate, and the Ramblers took the 2-0 victory.
