DePaul recognizes its 2005 Women’s College World Series team
CHICAGO – DePaul softball (14-30, 1-19 BIG EAST) fell to Creighton (21-23, 11-9 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon, 10-3. Prior to the game, the Blue Demons celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 2005 team that advanced to the Women's College World Series for the third time in program history.
Baylee Cosgrove went two for four at the plate, including a three-RBI double to tie the game in the second inning.
Bella Nigey started her second consecutive game in the circle, allowing seven runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work. The Bettendorf, Iowa native earned four strikeouts, her most since February 28 against Mount St. Mary's. Nigey exited in favor of Ava Gusel, who allowed a pair of runs on two hits. Junior Kelly Greene went 1.2 scoreless frames before Hannah Messer concluded the contest, giving up just one hit. Nigey falls to 7-10 as the pitcher of record.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
A pair of walks put two Bluejays on base before Kaelan Schultz delivered a blast to left field for a three-run home run.
Cosgrove delivered a leadoff single down the left field line and a sacrifice bunt from Morgan Rogers pushed her into scoring position, but she was left on base after a quick pair of outs.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the second frame, Cosgrove launched a double to the back wall that scored Alexis Houge, Chelsea Parker and Addison Talbot, knotting the game at three runs.
Lily West immediately responded with a solo home run to put Creighton back ahead.
Lydia Ettema reached third base for the Blue Demons, logging a base hit and advancing on a pair of ground outs, but she was left stranded. The Bluejays also stranded a pair in scoring position in the fourth.
Schultz added a two-RBI double in the fifth and Sydney Potter followed up with another RBI double to score pinch runner Cydney Fullerton. Hannah Poole and Avery Barnard tacked on two more, both recording RBI singles. A ground out from Ella Dalton scored Poole for the final run of the frame.
The Blue Demons fought back in the sixth frame, with a double from Carly Alvers bringing a pair of runners into scoring position, but were not able to drive across any runs.
The final two innings passed scoreless, and Creighton took the 10-3 win.
