Chelsea Parker earns first career grand slam
CHICAGO – DePaul softball (14-31, 1-20 BIG EAST) fell to Creighton (22-23, 12-9 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon, 12-5.
Freshman Chelsea Parker launched her first career grand slam in just her sixth collegiate start, also the first home run of her career.
Kelly Greene got the nod in the circle, giving up four runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. Freshman Hannah Messer entered in relief, allowing no hits and no runs in 1.1 innings of work. After starting both Friday and Saturday, Bella Nigey threw 3.1 innings in relief on Sunday, conceding eight runs on nine hits. Katey Pierce recorded the final two outs in her 13th appearance.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Strong base running from Ashten Pierson earned the Bluejays a run without a base hit, as she reached on a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out, and stole home.
With the bases loaded in the second frame, a sacrifice fly from Ella Dalton and single from Sydra Seville drove across a pair of runs, and a bases-loaded walk for Lily West left the Bluejays with a four-run advantage early.
Lydia Ettema tallied the first hit for the Blue Demons, and a grand slam from Parker later in the third inning knotted the game at four runs apiece.
In the following frame, Dalton sent a solo home run to right center field to put the Bluejays ahead once again. Seville doubled, and a sacrifice bunt from Pierson added a second run to the lead for Creighton. The Bluejays plated two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh, and despite a double from Baylee Cosgrove scoring Brooke Cwick, Creighton won the final game of the weekend, 12-5.
