Bella Nigey tallies career-high eight strikeouts
WASHINGTON, D.C. – DePaul softball defeated Georgetown twice on Friday afternoon, 7-1 and 4-2, for their first BIG EAST series win of the year.
Bella Nigey pitched her third complete game of the season, giving up just one run and earning a career-high eight strikeouts in the opening contest.
Nigey got the nod once again for game two, hurling three scoreless frames before exiting in favor of Kelly Greene. Greene conceded two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings prior to freshman Ava Gusel entering in relief. Gusel allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of work.
Addison Talbot went three for four at the plate in game one and added a home run in both games, bringing her total to five home runs on the year. Lydia Ettema also totaled four hits on the day, two in each game, including a home run of her own in game two.
Baylee Cosgrove contributed three total hits across both games, as did Bibianna Rodriguez.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One: DePaul 7, Georgetown 1
The Blue Demons wasted no time, as leadoff hitter Cosgrove launched a solo home run to center field for the first score of the game. Ettema tallied a double and after a pair of walks Talbot brought Ettema across with an RBI single.
Despite a single from Claire Turner, who advanced all the way to third base, the Hoyas ended the opening frame scoreless.
Freshman Chelsea Parker earned her second career home run with a solo shot to start the third frame, and another home run from Talbot plated two more runs for the Blue Demons. Georgetown had runners in scoring position once again but stranded two on base after a pair of interference calls.
After both sides went three up, three down in the fourth, DePaul added another pair of runs in the fifth frame, earned by hits from Talbot, Carly Alvers, and Rodriguez.
Georgetown got one back with a solo home run from Emily Strittmatter, but DePaul took the 7-1 victory to open the series.
Game Two: DePaul 4, Georgetown 2
After Cosgrove reached base on an error to open the game, Ettema notched the fourth home run of the day for DePaul.
The Hoyas loaded the bases in the second frame and did not score, as consecutive throws from Rodriguez to catcher Zoe Levine tallied two critical outs. Cosgrove later registered a single up the middle and advanced to third base after a pair of wild pitches from Georgetown. Ettema brought her home for the second time with an RBI single, her fourth hit of the afternoon.
A solo home run from Talbot in the fourth added another run for the Blue Demons, but the Hoyas plated a pair of their own. Dayanara Campos reached base on a walk, and Nina Sarlo scored her with an RBI single. An RBI triple from Turner scored Sarlo to bring Georgetown within two runs.
Despite pushing runners into scoring position in each of the final two frames, the Hoyas did not score again, and DePaul emerged victorious, 4-2.
