Carly Alvers and Kali Blount each record two hits in defeat
JAMAICA, N.Y- DePaul softball (13-20, 1-11 BIG EAST) fell to the St. John's Red Storm (30-10-1, 11-1 BIG EAST) in an 11-3 decision in six innings on Saturday afternoon.
Carly Alvers and Kali Blount both recorded two hits, their third and fifth multi-hit games this season, respectively.
Kelly Greene was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings and notching a pair of strikeouts. The Palos Heights, Illinois native falls to 6-9 on the year. DePaul went deep into their bullpen, starting with freshman Ava Gusel, who allowed two runs on one hit in one inning. Fellow freshman Hannah Messer entered for two frames, conceding four runs on four hits. Senior Katey Pierce recorded the final out for the Blue Demons, allowing one run on two hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Red Storm struck first with a solo home run from senior London Jarrard in the opening frame, and later extended their advantage in the third, bringing a trio of runs across after two base hits, a pair of walks, and a two-RBI single from Melanie Santos.
DePaul plated a pair of runs in the fourth, as Kelly Beaupre was walked, Alvers hit a double to the left field line, and a ground out from Addison Talbot brought Beaupre around to score. An RBI single from Bibianna Rodriguez then scored Alvers.
St. John's tacked on two more runs in the fifth, but the Blue Demons would not go down quietly, adding one more run after another walk for Beaupre and hits from Alvers and Blount.
Consecutive home runs from the Red Storm in the sixth frame put the game out of reach, with Celia Macari plating three RBI, and Santos following with a solo shot of her own. The Johnnies then walked in one final run to take the victory, 11-3.
