Baylee Cosgrove notches seventh multi-hit game of season
SOUTH BEND, IND. – DePaul softball (13-21) fell to Notre Dame (19-21-1) Tuesday evening, 8-0 in six innings.
Senior Baylee Cosgrove logged two hits from the leadoff spot, her seventh multi-hit game of the season. Kali Blount, Chelsea Parker, and Addison recorded one hit each on the day.
Junior pitcher Bella Nigey saw the opening three innings of work in the circle, allowing three runs on one hit. Freshman Hannah Messer entered for the subsequent two outs, giving up four runs on three hits. Kelly Greene pitched the final two frames, conceding just one run on two hits.
Nigey moves to 7-5 on the season, while Shannon Becker improves to 5-2 as the pitcher of record for Notre Dame.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Despite Cosgrove earning a base hit on the first pitch of the game, the Blue Demons would not score in the opening frame, with Cosgrove caught stealing for the first time this season.
A pair of walks and a home run from Addison Amaral quickly gave the Irish a three-run advantage, but Nigey proceeded to retire eight straight batters for the Blue Demons before exiting the game in favor of Messer.
Consecutive singles from Rachel Allen and Olivia Levitt followed by a walk for Jane Kronenberger then loaded the bases for the Irish, and Christina Willemssen brought home a run with another base hit to right field.
Emily Tran was also walked, bringing Levitt home to score, and a two-RBI single from Caroline O'Brien concluded the scoring onslaught, leaving the Irish with a 7-0 lead through four frames.
Kronenberger doubled to center field to start the sixth inning for Notre Dame, and a pair of walks brought her to third base. A fielder's choice allowed Kronenberger to score and finished the 8-0 victory for the Irish in six innings.
