Blue Demons level in 69th minute to notch first BIG EAST points of season
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – DePaul women's soccer battled back on Wednesday night, erasing a halftime deficit with a determined second-half push to earn a 1-1 draw at Butler's Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl. The result extended the Blue Demons' unbeaten run against the Bulldogs to four straight meetings.
"It was a fair result, with both teams having stretches of momentum throughout the game," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "I'm very proud of our group for staying composed, continuing to believe, and fighting until we found a way to score a quality goal. A lot of players stepped up and contributed to the performance tonight. We're excited to carry this momentum into next Wednesday's match."
DePaul (3-6-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) grabbed its first point of league play while recording its first draw of the 2025 campaign. The equalizer came from sophomore Tewabech Seerup, who scored the first goal of her career in the 69th minute to cap off a strong second-half response. Sophomore transfer goalkeeper Maddie Iro made her first start in a Blue Demon uniform, tallying five saves to anchor the comeback effort.
Butler (3-1-5, 0-0-2 BIG EAST) settled for its fifth draw of the season, continuing a stretch of five consecutive matches without a loss. The Bulldogs struck first in the opening half and held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks, but were unable to reclaim the lead after Seerup's equalizer.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when Alyssa Carlson netted her second goal of the year off assists from Lea Larouche and Emily O'Malley. DePaul had produced the first chance of the night through captain Jen Devona, whose low strike in the 15th minute was handled by Butler goalkeeper Addison Ash.
The Blue Demons found their breakthrough in the 69th minute. Tessa Fagerson worked her way down the left side and delivered a cross that Seerup finished right up the middle, knotting the match at one. The assist was Fagerson's second of the season, tying Shayna Da Silva for the team lead.
DePaul nearly took the lead late as Katelyn Jamie saw a shot blocked in the 77th and Sienna Gonzales fired just high in the 81st. On the other end, Iro came up with key saves in the closing minutes, including a stop on Ceilidh Whynott in the 87th, to secure the result.
Match Notes
DePaul returns home to Wish Field to take on Villanova, Wednesday, Oct. 1. First touch is slated for 4 p.m. CT in Lincoln Park.
