Softball Drops Opening Day at Fonseca Memorial Tournament

TAMPA, FLA. – DePaul softball dropped its opening day of games at the Fonseca Memorial Tournament, hosted by USF, Friday. The Blue Demons fell 9-1 in 5 innings to Boston College (4-3) before dropping a 4-1 decision to Indiana State (3-5).
Chelsea Parker stayed hot after a strong opening weekend, going a combined 4-of-6 on the day with a pair of RBI. Parker hit a solo home run for DePaul's lone run in the second game Friday. Lydia Ettema went 3-of-6 across the two games, adding her third stolen base of the season against the Sycamores.
DePaul (6-2) used five pitchers between the two games, with Kelly Greene starting against Boston College. Green (2-1) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits before being relieved by Gwen Baker. Baker went 2.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits.
Hannah Messer earned the start in game two of the day, pitching 4.0 innings. Messer (3-1) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits. Bella Nigey threw the final 2.0 innings of the day, not allowing a run on two hits.
Game 1 – Boston College 9, DePaul 1 (5 inn.)
Boston College took the early lead off a three-run homer in the first inning. DePaul got on the board in the third after Alexis Hogue reached on a fielder's choice, before scoring on a single by Parker.
Boston College extended its lead, 6-1, with a second home run in the fourth inning. Despite opportunities in the fifth, DePaul left three runners stranded. The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame before eventually ending the game with its final run off a wild pitch.
Game 2 – Indiana State 4, DePaul 1
Parker opened game two of the day with a solo home run in the first inning for an early 1-0 DePaul lead. The homer extended Parker's eight-game hit streak to open the season. Indiana State responded in the third, tying the game at 1-1 on a single and pair of walks.
Ettema recorded a single and stole second in the top of the fourth inning, but was ultimately stranded. The Sycamores took the leader later in the inning, following a DePaul fielding error.
Indiana State extended its lead, 4-1, on Addie Burns' second RBI single of the day. The Sycamores' pitching staff closed out the final two innings to secure the win.
