Blue Demons close out final day in Florida before opening BIG EAST play at home
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – DePaul softball split a pair of games with Jacksonville on Sunday morning to wrap up the Jacksonville Tournament.
Morgan Rogers continued her hot streak at the plate, tallying two more doubles to bring her weekend total to four. Designated player Lydia Ettema also turned in a strong performance, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
In the circle, Bella Nigey threw 0.1 innings Sunday to add to the 4.0 innings she logged Friday before handing the ball to Hannah Messer. Messer shut down the Dolphins' offense over the final 2.2 innings of the opener and earned the start in the tournament finale. She worked 4.0 innings before Kelly Greene and Gwen Baker each contributed 1.0 inning in relief.
How It Happened
Game 1 – DePaul 5, Jacksonville 1
Resuming play after Friday's weather suspension, Messer entered in relief of Nigey and worked DePaul out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth, keeping the score at 4-1.
DePaul (9-12) quickly reignited its offense. Rogers led off with a double, and Ettema followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 5-1.
In the seventh, Addy Poe opened with a base hit up the middle, and Bibianna Rodriguez added a single of her own. Messer shut the door in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 5-1 victory.
Game 2 – DePaul 3, Jacksonville 5
Jacksonville (11-9) struck first with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead.
DePaul responded in the third when Emersyn Coulter delivered an RBI single, and Parker added a sacrifice fly to give the Blue Demons a 2-1 advantage. The Dolphins answered immediately with a two-run home run to reclaim the lead, 3-2, and tacked on another run in the fourth to make it 4-2.
In the top of the fifth, Maya Wondaal drew a walk, and Rogers doubled to put runners in scoring position. Brooke Cwick's sacrifice fly cut the deficit to 4-3, and Ettema followed with a single to put runners on the corners. DePaul was unable to capitalize, and Jacksonville added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to seal the 5-3 win.
