DePaul Softball Bested by Villanova in BIG EAST Opener

Rogers extends her double streak in loss
CHICAGO – DePaul softball dropped its BIG EAST opener Friday afternoon, falling 7-2 to Villanova at Cacciatore Stadium.
Morgan Rogers had a strong showing at the plate, extending her hit streak to five games and notching her fifth multi-hit game of the season. The junior went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, her fifth consecutive game with a double. Chelsea Parker also plated a run in her base hit, bringing her totals to 21 RBIs on 25 hits this season.
Senior Bella Nigey got the start in the circle but was relieved by Gwen Baker after 0.1 innings. Baker covered the next 1.2 innings, before Kelly Greene took over in the third. Greene had a strong outing, giving up no runs across 4.0 innings of work. Lefthander Ava Gusel tossed the remaining 1.0 inning.
How It Happened
Villanova (3-18, 1-0 BIG EAST) struck early with a five-run first inning, then plated two more in the second to make it a 7-0 game.
DePaul (9-13, 0-1 BIG EAST) was able to chip away at the deficit in the third inning. Freshman Kailie Westphal got the bats going with a pinch-hit RBI double, followed by a Rogers RBI double. Parker followed up with an RBI base hit to make the score 7-2 at the end of three.
The Blue Demons had two strong defensive innings in the fourth and fifth frames, turning a pair of double plays to hold the score at 7-2. DePaul notched a hit in the bottom of each inning, but were unable to capitalize.
The Wildcats plated another run in the top of the seventh on a heads-up play off a sacrifice bunt to push the score to 8-2. Villanova added another insurance run on a passed ball make it a to 9-2 ballgame, which held as the final score.
