Track and field enter second half of outdoor season with split weekend slate
INDIANA/CALIFORNIA – Officially entering the second half of its outdoor season, DePaul track and field returns to a split-squad weekend from April 16-18, with athletes competing at the Gibson Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
The Blue Demons' distance group returns to the Bryan Clay Invitational for the fifth consecutive year, continuing its presence at one of the deepest and most competitive distance meets in the country. On the other side of the schedule, DePaul heads back to Terre Haute for the Gibson Invitational, a meaningful stop that doubles as a homecoming for assistant coaches Geoff Wayton and Brandon Murer.
Last Time Out
DePaul track and field closed a busy weekend at three meets in Elmhurst, Miami, and Tampa, producing eight event wins and multiple record performances in the men's 3,000m, hammer throw, and men's 4x400m relay.
Mohamed Abdullahi headlined the weekend at the Chicagoland Championships, breaking a 10-year-old program mark in the 3,000m with a winning time of 8:23.47. John Bush added a victory in the 800m and 1500m, Tessa Roe captured the women's 3,000m title in 9:53.95, and Cole Tupper grabbed a win in the 5000m.
At the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, Jaiah Hopf earned first in the triple jump at 12.62m, with multiple top-five finishes in jumps and combined events. In Tampa at the South Florida Invitational, the Blue Demons closed the weekend with a pair of victories and two program records. Alex Bernstein won the hammer throw with a school-record mark of 70.62m, while the men's 4x400m relay secured first place in 3:08.60.
Bernstein Brings the Hammer
Bernstein continued his dominant outdoor campaign with a record-setting performance at the South Florida Invitational in Tampa. The graduate student won the hammer throw with a mark of 70.62m, becoming the first athlete in DePaul history to surpass the 70m barrier. The throw broke a school record that had stood since 2001, previously held by Carey Ryan. The mark leads the BIG EAST this season and ranks eighth nationally in NCAA Division I, as Bernstein has remained inside the national top-10 since the opening meet of his outdoor campaign. He has now won all three of his meets this season, continuing a flawless stretch in the event.
