DePaul claims two event wins at Indiana State; distance group competes under the lights in Azusa
INDIANA/CALIFORNIA – DePaul track and field closed a split weekend Saturday at the Gibson Invitational and Bryan Clay Invitational, highlighted by a program record from Kalina Urbaniak in the 1500m and a pair of top finishes and personal records. Despite cool conditions in Terre Haute, the Blue Demons turned in a full day of competitive efforts, while the distance group raced under the lights at Azusa Pacific.
Not a bad day [in Terre Haute] for competing in 50-degree weather, said director of cross country/track & field Dave Dopek. It wasn't ideal conditions, but we still saw quality work across the board. Overall, a productive day, and the work done this weekend will pay off as we move deeper into the season.
At Indiana State, Sade Miller led the Blue Demons on the track, winning the 100m in a personal-best 11.44, a mark that ranks No. 42 in NCAA Division I. She added a second-place finish in the 200m (23.85). Caleb Schulz paced the men's sprinters with a season-best 10.52 in the 100m to place sixth, while Denhm Holt placed seventh in the 400m (48.09). Harper Bryan added a sixth-place finish in the 400m hurdles (54.92).
In the field, Lauren Drew claimed the discus title with a season-best 46.32m. Jaiden Gary finished second in the invitational section of the shot put with an 18.07m toss, moving into the top 60 nationally. Joshua Hill added a runner-up finish in the long jump (6.65m), while Asha Pierre-Antoine placed second in the triple jump (11.71m). Lauren Pacsi led the middle-distance group with a second-place finish in the 800m (2:16.62), while Nick Quinn recorded a personal-best 1:56.86 on the men's side.
Over at Bryan Clay in Azusa, Urbaniak reset the DePaul program record in the women's 1500m, clocking a personal-best 4:20.89. Isabella Orozco followed with a time of 4:23.17 in the same event.
