Blue Demons use power to pick up 20th win of the season
Sophomore first baseman Chelsea Parker paced the offense, finishing a triple shy of the cycle in a 3-for-4 performance with two RBIs. Parker also launched her 15th home run of the season, moving within one of the program's single-season record.
At the top of the lineup, Alexis Houge went 2-for-3 with a run scored, marking her fifth multi-hit game of the season. Junior center fielder Morgan Rogers added two hits and two RBIs, including her second home run of the year, while freshman outfielder Emersyn Coulter continued her strong finish with a 2-for-3 day and a run scored.
Designated player Lydia Ettema contributed her sixth home run of the season, which ranks second on the team, while Brooke Cwick added to the scoring with her 23rd RBI of the year on a fourth-inning double.
Kelly Greene got the start in the circle, going 2.1 innings and surrendering two runs on five hits before being lifted for Hannah Messer in the bottom of the third. The sophomore right-hander closed out the game, allowing just one run on four hits while facing 17 batters to earn her ninth win of the season. How It Happened
Much like game one, the Blue Demons were the aggressors from the jump, as the first four batters notched hits to put the visitors in front 2-0 early. Â Houge got things going with a leadoff double before Rogers followed with a base hit up the middle, forcing a Bluejays error that allowed Houge to score from second and moved two runners into scoring position. Jolie Adams then put runners on the corners with a base hit to left field, setting up Parker to drive in a run from third. Creighton induced three straight outs, however, as DePaul left runners aboard.
Creighton responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the third to narrow DePaul's lead to 2-1. In the next frame, the Bluejays tied the game with their second solo shot of the contest.
Behind a pair of solo home runs, the Blue Demons extended their lead in the top of the fifth. Rogers recorded her second long ball of the season in the leadoff spot to double the DePaul advantage before Ettema sent a two-out no-doubter to left center for her sixth homer of the season, making it 5-2.
Home runs were the story of the game, as Creighton got a run back with its third solo shot to cut the deficit to 5-3.
DePaul (20-29, 8-15) added insurance in the top of the seventh as Parker recorded her 15th home run of the campaign to push the lead to 6-3. Creighton notched a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh, but Messer induced a pair of groundouts as DePaul evened the series.
