Blue Demons unable to recover after first-half penalty kick goal

CHICAGO – The DePaul women's soccer team dropped its second-to-last nonconference matchup, falling 1-0 to North Texas at Wish Field on Sunday, Sept. 13. With the result, the Blue Demons move to 3-2-2 on the season.

How It Happened
The Mean Green opened the match with an edge in shot attempts over the first 15 minutes, finding their first shot attempt in the 6th minute before amassing two corner kicks and three shots over the next 10 minutes.

North Texas scored its first and only goal in the 20th minute after a foul on DePaul in the box earned the Mean Green a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Mason Hillery was unable to stop the penalty strike, and North Texas took a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Demons refused to give up despite the one-goal deficit, stringing together a series of four shot attempts over two minutes to end the half. However, none of the strikes met their mark, and DePaul entered the break on the hunt to equalize. DePaul was narrowly outshot 7-4 in the first half, and Hillery executed the one and only save of the first 45 minutes.

I thought it was a really open game with a lot of transition moments, said head coach Michele O'Brien. We had a lot of good spells, good moments and enough opportunities to find the back of the net; we just didn't quite execute it.

Down 1-0 after halftime, the Blue Demons fought to score the equalizer. DePaul created six more shot opportunities in the second half and amassed two critical corner kicks in the 84th and 90th minutes.

We never gave up. I thought we continued to push the tempo to try to get a goal back, said O'Brien. We were definitely on top of the game late, and I thought maybe something would fall our way, but it just didn't today.

The ball never found the back of the net, and the Blue Demons took their second loss of the season and first loss at home.

Mason Hillery made two saves in the afternoon, and DePaul ended the game with 10 shot attempts. Three of those shot attempts came from the foot of freshman forward Katelyn Haiser.

Match Notes
- Freshman Emma Strcic made her second career start in the Blue Demons' tussle with North Texas on Sept. 13.
- Senior midfielder Danielle Fjeldsted recorded her 50th career start as a Blue Demon this afternoon. She is the only active player to earn this honor.
