Katelyn Haiser delivers in 89th minute against Southern Indiana

CHICAGO – With time dwindling on a gray afternoon at Wish Field, freshman forward Katelyn Haiser delivered in crunch time, scoring a final-minute equalizer to draw Southern Indiana 1-1.

How It Happened
The Blue Demons took control of the opening minutes, tallying a shot in the first and third minutes.

After two early attempts missed the mark, the Blue Demons' offensive attack finally forced Southern Indiana goalkeeper Merrick Schwalbach into action in the 15th minute. Haiser ripped a shot on goal, but the Screaming Eagle goalkeeper gathered it to keep the match level early.

The rest of the first half remained deadlocked. By halftime, the Blue Demons held a slight 5-3 edge in shot attempts, but neither team put significant pressure on goal. Both Mason Hillery and Schwalbach faced just one shot over the first 45.

Southern Indiana broke the game open in the 51st minute. Anna Depenbrock kicked off the play with the throw-in toward goal, where Eva Boer footed the ball to Shea Krakowski, who found the back of the net.

Down 1-0 with five minutes remaining in the match, DePaul caught a big break, as a strike to the back of the net from Southern Indiana was called off after review, keeping the goal deficit at one.

"I think the goal being called off was almost a 'phew, that's a lifeline' moment for the team, and that's when they really pushed and turned it up a notch," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "The called-off goal helped inspire us for sure."

Reenergized, DePaul made a final push, generating three more chances in the attacking third before breaking through on the last attempt.

In the 89th minute, a forward pass from Kristen Schwartz went sailing toward goal, where Danielle Fjeldsted and Haiser waited. Schwalbach made the initial save, but the ball rebounded off of Haiser and into the back of the net.

"I think we were struggling to find more creative ways to break Southern Indiana down and got a little predictable at times, so I was glad we were able to make adjustments and find a way — late in the game — to get the equalizer," said O'Brien.

Running off the final minute on the clock, DePaul earned a point in its last nonconference matchup of the season. The Blue Demons outshot the Screaming Eagles 12-7 and accumulated six corner kick chances.

Freshman Katelyn Haiser recorded her second collegiate goal against Southern Indiana.
The last time DePaul scored in the final two minutes of the match was Sept.12, 2024. Freya Jupp scored in the 90th minute to give the Blue Demons a 2-0 victory over Lindenwood.
