Big second-half run by Northwestern too much to overcome for Blue Demons
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern used a second-half rally as DePaul fell to the Wildcats, 75-68, at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday. The Blue Demons closed to within three in the final minutes, but couldn't overcome a late 10-point deficit that followed a 25-point run for Northwestern.
Max Strus got the ball rolling for the Blue Demons with a game-opening three-pointer and strong offensive efforts helped DePaul retain their lead for the entire first half. Overall, DePaul led for 33 of the 40 minutes on Saturday afternoon.
DePaul (5-2) led by 12 at halftime and as many as 15 points midway through the second half. The Blue Demons held the Wildcats to 4-of-17 shooting from three-point range in the first half, but Northwestern went 7-of-14 in the second frame that propelled them to a 10-point lead with three minutes remaining in the game.
As Northwestern (7-3) warmed up, DePaul went cold with the Blue Demons going scoreless for nearly seven minutes.
Trailing by 10, DePaul made one last push as two free throws by Femi Olujobi pulled the Blue Demons to within three with 1:20 left, but Northwestern made eight straight free throws for the 75-68 final.
Olujobi recorded season highs of 22 points and eight rebounds to go along with Devin Gage's career-high 17 points. Strus contributed eight points and nine rebounds while Eli Cain and Jalen Coleman-Lands each finished with nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
A.J. Turner and Vic Law combined for 49 points and 10 rebounds for Northwestern. Turner was named the winner of the Waldo Fisher-Frank McGrath Award that goes to the most outstanding player of each DePaul-Northwestern game. He scored 24 points with six three-pointers.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena for a Wednesday night matchup against Chicago State. Start time is 7 p.m. on FS1 and 670 The Score.
