Blue Demons place five players in double figures Wednesday night
CHICAGO – Max Strus finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, but a 14-3 Creighton run to close the first half proved the difference as the Bluejays edged DePaul, 79-67, Wednesday night at Wintrust Arena.
Joining Strus in double figures was Eli Cain finished with 14 points and four assists while Flynn Cameron set a career high with 11 points. Devin Gage and Femi Olujobi also chipped in with 10 points apiece for the Blue Demons.
Neither Creighton (14-13, 5-9 BIG EAST) nor DePaul had it going early offensively as the two sides combined to start 4-of-15 from the field before a media timeout stopped action on the floor with 15:22 left in the opening half and the score at 7-5 in favor of the Bluejays.
The two teams traded leads over much of the first half, and with 8:13 left before the break, on the back of an eight point explosion from Cameron the Blue Demons took a 20-19 advantage. With a little over four minutes left in the half, following another three pointer from Cameron, the DePaul lead stood at 28-27.
Down the stretch, the Bluejays would end the first half with a surge, outscoring the Blue Demons 14-3 to go into the intermission in front 41-30.
Out of the break, Strus quickly knocked down back-to-back threes, as DePaul slashed the Creighton advantage to five points less than two minutes into the action. Creighton responded and pushed its advantage back to 53-40 with a 10-3 run over the next four minutes.
DePaul (13-12, 5-9 BIG EAST) responded one last time with a 15-5 run to pull within three points on a three-pointer by Gage at the midway point of the second half, but that would be as close as the Blue Demons would get for the remainder of the game. The Bluejays knocked down consecutive three-pointers in the next two minutes to build the advantage back to nine points at 64-55.
Strus added eight rebounds to his 18 points while Cain totaled four assists. As a team, DePaul went just 5-for-13 (.385) from the free throw line while Creighton was 14-of-16 (.875) at the line. For the Bluejays, five players finished in double figures as Ty-Shon Alexander and Martin Krampelj led the way with 16 and 14 points.
DePaul is off this weekend and returns to action next Wednesday at Georgetown. The Blue Demons and Hoyas are scheduled for a 7 p.m. ET tip on CBS Sports Network and heard on WYLL (1160 AM).
