Blue Demons Run Past Central Michigan in CBI First Round

Eli Cain and Max Strus combine for 53 points in 100-86 win over Chippewas
CHICAGO - DePaul took care of business in the first round of the Roman College Basketball Invitational Wednesday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena as the Blue Demons prevailed with a 100-86 win over Central Michigan.
Max Strus led the way with 33 points and six rebounds for his third game of at least 30 points in the last four contests. Eli Cain finished with 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Paul Reed chipped in a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double.
DePaul (16-15) dominated the boards en route to a 44-29 advantage on the glass. In the second half, the Blue Demons shot .667 (22-33) from the field as DePaul outscored Central Michigan 54-44 over the final 20 minutes.
Central Michigan (23-12) jumped out to a 7-0 lead less than four minutes into the action, before back-to-back lay ups from Femi Olujobi and Reed pulled the Blue Demons back within three at 7-4.
The Chippewas would open up a double-digit lead, but DePaul stuck around and with 5:57 to go in the opening half, Strus knocked down a three to make it 35-30 in favor of Central Michigan. A little over a minute later, Cain knocked down a three to knot the score at 35-35.
With the first half winding down, the Blue Demons would narrowly outscore the visitor 11-7 to go into the intermission with a 46-42 lead.
Out of the break, the Blue Demons put together a 12-4 run and never looked back. The run pushed the lead to 60-52 four minutes into the second half. With 4:27 to go in the game, the Blue Demons opened their largest advantage of the evening at 94-78.
From that point on the result was never in question as the Chippewas would not get closer than 12 points in the final three minutes.
For Central Michigan, Larry Austin Jr. and David DiLeo led the way with 20 points apiece.
The Blue Demons return to action on Monday, March 25 in the quarterfinals of the CBI as they take on Longwood at McGrath-Phillips Arena. The Lancers defeated Southern Miss, 90-68, earlier on Monday evening. Tickets will go on sale at 9 a.m. CT on Thursday, March 21 at the DePaul ticket office, online or by phone.
