Blue Demons Drop Game One Against Bluejays

CHICAGO - DePaul and Creighton played the final two innings of Saturday's suspended game Sunday morning as the Bluejays held on to win game one of the weekend's series 7-5 at Cacciatore Stadium.

Creighton (18-21, 6-10 BIG EAST) took a five-run lead in the second inning, but DePaul would battle back scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-RBI double from senior Angela Scalzitti. Creighton would add a run in both the top of the third and the fourth to lead 7-2 after four innings.

Jessica Cothern would cut the Bluejays' lead to three runs on an opposite field two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth for DePaul before adverse weather conditions forced the game to be suspended and resumed on Sunday.

On Sunday, with the resumption of the game, neither team would score in the sixth inning. DePaul (30-11, 9-3 BIG EAST) scored a single run to cut their deficit to 7-5 in the bottom of seventh but could not get any closer as Creighton induced a ground out to end the game.

For DePaul, Cothern and Scalzitti led the way with two RBIs apiece. In the circle Krista Dalgarn fell to 12-6 as the junior pitcher allowed four earned runs over one and two thirds innings.

Creighton right fielder Mileah McKelvy led the visitor with two RBIs while the Bluejays' Kiele Miller improved to 7-4 in the circle.

DePaul returns to action shortly for today's regularly scheduled doubleheader.
