An explosive start highlighted the Blue Demon win

CHICAGO – Six early runs made the difference Sunday afternoon as DePaul held off a late rally from Creighton to take game two of the weekend's series 6-5 at Cacciatore Stadium.

In the bottom of the first, the Blue Demons (31-11, 10-3 BIG EAST) opened the scoring as freshman Gabby O'Riley brought home two runners with an RBI single and then junior Angela Scalzitti added one more run with a sac-fly.

After holding the Bluejays (18-22, 6-11 BIG EAST) scoreless in the top of the second, DePaul doubled its lead, moving in front 6-0 in the bottom of the second as Maranda Gutierrez knocked in two runs with a home run. Kate Polucha followed with a double, bringing home Greenwood.

Creighton would score one run in the top of the fourth, pulling within five runs as neither team scored in the fifth or sixth innings.

In the top of the seventh the Bluejays would rally, scoring four runs on a Kiara Mills RBI double and a three-run homerun from Kailey Wilson but Krista Dalgarn would replace Natalie Halvorson with one out in the inning to get the game's final two outs, earning the save for the Blue Demons in the process.

For DePaul, Gutierrez led the way with two RBIs on two hits while Halvorson earned the win, her 19^th, for her 6.1 innings in the circle for the host.

Creighton's Kiele Miller fell to 7-5 in the circle, giving up six runs in one and two third innings.

DePaul returns to action shortly for the third and final game of this weekend's series.
