Softball Drops Final Game of Pirate Clash

CHICAGO - DePaul fell to Hampton in a 8-7 decision on the final day of the Pirate Clash in Greenville, N.C. The Blue Demons finished the weekend with a 2-3 record after sweeping host East Carolina.
Senior third baseman Erin Andris got things rolling for DePaul in the first inning, doubling to score shortstop Maranda Gutierrez to give DePaul a 1-0 advantage. Hampton would score a run in the bottom of the first to tie, but the Blue Demons kept pushing.
Gutierrez crushed a two-run homer for her first HR of the season in the second to push DePaul over Hampton, 3-1, but the Pirates fought back to tie the game again at 3-3.
In the third, senior Kate Polucha singled to score two and sophomore Taylor Young scored Polucha, giving DePaul a 6-3 lead. Sophomore transfer Erin Hocker would take over in the circle and keep Hampton to just three runs until they scored another in the fourth.
Polucha hit a solo home run to give DePaul a 7-4 lead but Hampton would tie things up in the bottom of the fifth. DePaul would ultimately fall in the seventh inning, 8-7.
Up Next
DePaul will head to the Samford Tournament next weeked to face the likes of Georgia Tech, Samford and Kentucky.
