CHICAGO - DePaul softball opened up play on Saturday with a 6-0 shutout of Northern Illinois in their penultimate game of the Saluki Invitational. The Blue Demons move to 8-11 with one game remaining this weekend.
DePaul scored their first run in the second inning when senior catcher Jessica Cothern doubled through the right side to score senior third baseman Erin Andris who walked earlier in the inning.
The Blue Demons tacked on another run in the sixth following a Gabby O'Riley single. Cothern's sacrifice fly out would allow Taylor Young - who pinch ran for O'Riley - to score.
DePaul's Natalie Halvorson kept NIU scoreless through the seventh inning but DePaul's offense wasn't done. Junior Skylor Hilger singled and scored off a Kate Polucha single giving the Blue Demons a 3-0 advantage. Freshman Brooke Johnson pitt the nail in the coffin with a three-run blast scoring Maranda Gutierrez and Polucha.
Halvorson, now 1-1, earned her first win of the season.
