DePaul Falls to Western Illinois in Extra Innings

Leathernecks offensive outburst in the seventh inning too much for the Blue Demons
Both sides were held scoreless through the first three innings, before offense characterized the latter half of the contest.
DePaul (3-2) put a single run up in the fourth with a Jess Cothern double followed by a Brooke Johnson RBI double to right field.
Western Illinois answered with a run in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to knot the score at 1-1.
The Blue Demons posted five runs in the bottom half of the inning to widen the margin to 6-1. Maranda Gutierrez singled to left field and was later pushed across the plate by the first of two Angela Scalzitti RBI triples. Gabby O'Riley walked and soon after Kate Polucha singled to score Scalzitti. Jess Cothern put an exclamation point on the inning with a three-run homer to center field to clear the bases.
Following a Gutierrez single, Scalzitti knocked in her second RBI triple of the day and the Blue Demons led Western Illinois, 7-1.
The Leathernecks went on to pour in six runs in the top of the seventh inning on five hits and two DePaul throwing errors.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cothern delivered with a double to right field, but her teammates couldn't bring her home, sending the game to an eighth inning.
A Western Illinois sacrifice bunt proved to be the difference maker as the runner placed on second went on to score and take the lead for good.
Cothern posted three hits and three RBI while Scalzitti had two RBI on two hits.
DePaul will take a weekend off from competition before returning to the field for the Coach B Classic on Feb. 26-28 in Carbondale, Ill.
