Men's Tennis takes down Illinois State 5-2 in Downstate Bloomington
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – It was a fun ride home for men's tennis on Friday night.
The Blue Demons improved to 3-1 in the dual-match season with a 5-2 victory over Illinois State at Bloomington Tennis & Turf.
DePaul started out like it was going to be a sweep, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and a point away from clinching the nonconference match.
Fran and Vito Tonejc opened with a 6-0 doubles win over Illinois State's Diego Herrera and Pol Botifoll Rius. Lars Peder Minsaas and Luuk Wassenaar secured the doubles point after prevailing 6-4 over Nam Pham and Ming-Chieh Chiu.
The lead expanded to 3-0 courtesy of singles victories by Boris Spanjaard in the No. 3 position and Vito Tonejc at No. 2. Spanjaard bested Melker Isaksson 6-2, 6-0 while Tonejc took down Diego Le Gal Perez 6-4, 6-2.
That's when things started tightening up. Illinois State (1-9) won at No. 1 and No. 4 singles to creep within 3-2 in its home opener after opening the season with eight consecutive road matches.
But that's as close as the Redbirds would get as Tripp Tuff slammed the door on the home team with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 decision over Diego Herrera at No. 5 singles.
Luuk Wassenaar closed out the scoring after defeating Ming-Chieh Chiu 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.
"We got a tough win today," said DePaul coach Matt Brothers. "Our guys came out and go the doubles point to give us momentum and then had to fight hard for the next three points.
"I'm proud of the work the put in on the practice court and how they competed today."
DePaul is back in action Feb. 28 with a BIG EAST matchup at Marquette.
