The Blue Demons drop exhibition after three first-half Commodore goals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – DePaul women's soccer fell to the No. 8 Vanderbilt Commodores in an exhibition match on Saturday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn at Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. After falling behind 3-0 in the first half, the Blue Demons were unable to push across a goal against the defending SEC Tournament Champions.

"This was a great learning experience for our group to match up against a top-ten team on the road," said head coach Erin Chastain. "Vanderbilt is really sharp after playing a fall season. Hopefully we learned a lot from some of the bright moments out there and also from some of the breakdowns. We'll use that to be ready for Butler on Thursday."

The Commodores jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals in the 14th and 18th minutes. The Blue Demons were only able to muster one shot on goal during the first 45 minutes as the Commodores back half dug in. Vanderbilt's Haley Hopkins scored her second goal with 15 minutes left to play in the first half to make the Commodore advantage 3-0.

The Blue Demons put more pressure on the Commodores in the second half when trying to chip into the deficit. Blue Demon midfielder Bina Saipi and forward Kristin Boos were both able to fire a pair of shots on net in the second half but all four tries were stopped by Commodore keepers. Junior goalie Mollie Eriksson played the second half for the Blue Demons, stopping three shots and keeping Vandy off of the scoreboard.

The Blue Demons begin BIG EAST play on Thursday, March 4 with a matchup against the Butler Bulldogs in Indianapolis, Ind. DePaul kicks off conference play with an official 1-0-0 record after a 2-1 win over Valpo in the squad's lone regular season non-conference match. The Blue Demons will host the Marquette Golden Eagles on Sunday, March 7 at 1:00pm CT at Wish Field for the first home contest of the 2020-21 season.
