Friday Finale of men's tennis team's spring break trip through Tennessee
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – DePaul ran into on Friday what coach Matt Brothers described as "the best team we have played so far" in the finale of its spring break road trip through Tennessee.
No. 46 Middle Tennessee State downed DePaul 6-1 at the Adams Tennis Complex. The Blue Demons head back to Lincoln Park with an 8-5 record in the dual-match season while Middle Tennessee State improves to 12-5.
Friday started out like the Band of Brothers had their sights set on a stunning upset.
After dropping the matchup at No. 3 doubles, Tripp Tuff and Fran Tonejc evened the score with a 6-4 victory over MTSU's Tom Moonen and Chris Edge in the No. 2 slot.
That left it up to DePaul's No. 1 doubles team of Christopher Casati and Boris Spanjaard who delivered in the clutch knocking off Pavel Motl and Stijn Slump 7-6(1) for the doubles point.
That triumph boosted Casati and Spanjaard to a sparkling 9-2 record on the season.
But the Blue Raiders showed why they are ranked in the Oracle/ITA Top 50 Men's Tennis Coaches Poll by sweeping all six singles matches.
Although Vito Tonejc saw his eight-match winning streak halted after a 6-3, 6-0 setback to Francisco Rocha at No. 1 singles, Tonejc hung in there against the No. 35 singles player in the country.
Tripp Tuff won the first set at No. 6 but could not maintain his early momentum in dropping a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 decision to Max Rauch.
"It was a tough one against the best team we have played so far," Brothers said. "We played great doubles to give us the momentum. The guys all fought hard in their singles matches, but they were just a little better than us today."
The Blue Demons return to BIG EAST Conference action on April 2 with a match at Butler in Indianapolis.
