Blue Demons prevail 4-3 at BIG EAST adversary Butler
INDIANAPOLIS – It was indeed a Good Friday for the Blue Demons in snapping a three-match skid.
Coach Matt Brothers and his team took down BIG EAST opponent Butler 4-3 in their first action since returning from last week's spring break trip through Tennessee.
They started out strong at the Butler Outdoor Tennis Courts with the No. 2 doubles team of Fran Tonejc and Tripp Tuff topping Michael Karr and Ryan Roegner 6-1.
Vito Tonejc and Luuk Wassenaar secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 position over Borja Miralles and Alvaro Huet Vadillo.
That doubles point wound up being the difference-maker as these BIG EAST adversaries split the singles competition.
DePaul (9-5) swept the first three singles matches in claiming the team win.
Tripp Tuff recorded the first singles success with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Miralles at No. 5 while improving to 9-5 on the season.
No. 1 singles standout Vito Tonejc followed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Michael Dickson and raised his singles record to 10-2.
The match clincher came courtesy of Luuk Wassenaar's 6-2, 6-3 conquest of Filip Tensing at No. 6.
Butler (4-6) won the final three singles matches at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4.
The Blue Demons have a big challenge on Monday traveling to face a Notre Dame team has played nine nationally ranked teams this spring with wins over No. 41 Duke, No. 46 Ball State and No. 50 Western Michigan.
