Blue Demons follow up with Monday match at Notre Dame
CHICAGO – Coach Matt Brothers and his men's tennis team will be venturing into the epicenter of college basketball on Friday.
That's when DePaul (8-5) will take on BIG EAST adversary Butler (4-5) at 12:30 p.m. in Indianapolis the day before the NCAA men's basketball Final Four tips off in Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Blue Demons are anxious to get back on the winning track after dropping all three matches during last week's spring break trip through Tennessee. Before heading down to the Volunteer State, Brothers & Co. had won five in a row.
Three days after playing Butler, Brothers has scheduled a rare Monday matchup with his team back on the road to face No. 42 Notre Dame (9-8).
According to the Oracle/ITA Top 50 national rankings released on Tuesday, the Fighting Irish will be the fourth nationally ranked opponent for the Blue Demons this season. They have beaten No. 44 Northern Illinois and lost to No. 38 Middle Tennessee State and No. 50 Western Michigan.
The Blue Demons' singles lineup is headed by Vito Tonejc in the No. 1 position with his sparkling 9-2 record. Tripp Tuff is 8-5 while both Boris Spanjaard and Fran Tonejc are 6-5.
Spanjaard and Christopher Casati have built a splendid 9-2 mark in doubles, playing all but one match in the No. 1 spot.
Butler has struggled this spring with schedule disruptions as seven of the Bulldogs matches have been either postponed or canceled. They have victories over DePauw, Chicago State, IUPUI and Marian and have lost to Cleveland State, Indianapolis, SMU, Louisville and Ball State.
Notre Dame has played nine nationally ranked teams with wins over No. 41 Duke and No. 50 Western Michigan, a split with No. 46 Ball State and losses to No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Tennessee, No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 22 Kentucky, No. 26 North Carolina State and No. 38 Middle Tennessee State.                                                                                                                                                 Â
