Seven different Blue Demons register a hit in 7-5 victory

CHICAGO – DePaul softball returned to competition for the first time in 17 days and picked up right where they left off with a 7-5 win over Loyola-Chicago on Wednesday afternoon.

Seven different Blue Demons registered a hit with Gabby O'Riley leading the way with three. Kate Polucha tallied a home run and three RBI's while O'Riley brought one across. DePaul scored at least one run in five of the seven innings.

DePaul (11-7, 3-0 BIG EAST) started the scoring early as Angela Scalzitti reached base on her seventh double of the season before Kate Polucha launched her fifth home run of the spring campaign to put the Blue Demons on top 2-0.

Loyola (5-16, 1-4 MVC) knotted the score at two in the bottom of the first after a single, double steal and throwing error on part of the Blue Demons.

Tori Meyer drew a leadoff walk in the second inning before O'Riley knocked a double to right field and a throwing error pushed Meyer across to give DePaul a 3-2 lead.

The third inning saw a Gutierrez leadoff base knock and an ensuing stolen base before Jessica Cothern tallied an RBI double down the left field line and give the Blue Demons a 4-2 advantage.

Loyola put one run up in the bottom half of the third to narrow the DePaul lead to one.

Nicole Sullivan tapped a single to center field in the to get things started in the fourth inning followed by a O'Riley single to right. Skylor Hilger drew a walk to load the bases. Gutierrez reached on a fielder's choice and Julyana Gomez crossed the plate on a throwing error by the pitcher. Polucha flied out to center field and scored Scalzitti as DePaul took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the fourth.

The Blue Demons scored their seventh run on the afternoon on a bases-loaded walk as Grace Frazier crossed the plate.

The bottom of the fifth saw Loyola score two runs to bring the deficit back to two.

Natalie Halvorson allowed just two hits in the final two innings to clinch DePaul's fourth win in a row.

With a victory on Wednesday afternoon, Krista Dalgarn now boasts a 7-1 mark on the season while Halvorson earned her first save on the 2021 campaign.

DePaul returns to action on Friday, April 2 for its home opener at Cacciatore Stadium.
