Tripp Tuff scores game-winner Sunday in 4-3 win over Drake
CHICAGO – It was another tension-packed day for DePaul men's tennis on Sunday.
Everything came down to the final singles match at No. 6 with the scoreboard showing the Blue Demons and Drake deadlocked at 3-3.
Riding the momentum and drawing confidence from big wins on Friday and Saturday, Tripp Tuff capped off a memorable weekend with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Freddie Powell at XS Tennis on the South Side.
That gave coach Matt Brothers' team a sort of tennis triple play racking up three wins in three days.
Competing on short rest is exactly what DePaul will encounter at the BIG EAST tournament next month in Cayce, S.C. with quarterfinals, semifinals and finals on three consecutive days.
Unlike wins over Cardinal Stritch on Friday and Northern Illinois on Saturday, the Band of Brothers started out Sunday losing the doubles point.
That was quickly rectified when Fran Tonejc opened the singles scoring with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Markus Bolin in the No. 4 slot.
DePaul (6-2 on the season) took the lead behind No. 1 singles standout and Fran's younger brother Vito's 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over Drake's Oliver Johansson.
The Bulldogs prevailed at No. 2 singles and it was 2-2 with three matches to go.
Christopher Casati restored the lead after a 7-6(1), 6-4 triumph over Evan Fragistas at No. 3 singles.
Drake retaliated at No. 5 and it was 3-3 heading into that Tuff performance at No. 6 singles.
"What a great weekend for our team," Brothers said. "Tonight, the seniors came up big again and it was a total team effort."
