Blue Demons Bring Home a BIG EAST Winner

Spanjaard clinches Sunday's 5-2 triumph at Xavier
CINCINNATI – It was a fun, late-night ride home Sunday from the Queen City for coach Matt Brothers and his men's tennis team.
DePaul brought back to Lincoln Park a 5-2 BIG EAST victory over Xavier while improving to 11-6 on the season and 3-1 in conference. Xavier fell to 2-10, 0-2.
The visiting team jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club after the Vito Tonejc/Luuk Wassenaar doubles team put up a 'W' in the No. 2 position and watched as the No. 1 tandem of Christopher Casati/Boris Spanjaard clinched the doubles point.
Casati and Spanjaard lifted their team-best doubles mark to 11-3 and Vito Tonecj and Wassenaar are now 5-2.
Wassenaar notched the first singles result by outplaying the Musketeers' Aaron Thompson 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 5 slot.
Xavier narrowed the Blue Demon lead to 2-1 after prevailing at No. 2 singles, only to have the "Band of Brothers" respond with three-straight singles triumphs.
The winning run began with Tripp Tuff taking down Jan Vrba 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and improving to 11-6 on the dual-match season.
Spanjaard followed up with the match clincher after defeating Cambell Nakayama 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot.
Freshman Phasu Sirinit increased the lead to 5-1 after celebrating his first NCAA Division I singles win, 6-4, 7-6(15-12) over Xavier's Shashank Reddy at No. 6.
The Blue Demons conclude the 2020-21 regular season with a 7:15 p.m. match Friday at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness against Omaha---alma mater of new DePaul men's basketball coach Tony Stubblefield.
