DePaul rallies with four-straight singles wins to beat Omaha 5-2 on Friday
CHICAGO – There's nothing like a stirring comeback followed by a Senior Day celebration afterwards to cap off your regular-season finale.
Trailing 2-1, DePaul rallied with four consecutive singles victories to overcome Omaha 5-2 on Friday at the XS Tennis Village on the South Side.
Coach Matt Brothers and his team will now bring a 12-6 record including 3-1 in the BIG EAST into next week's BIG EAST Men's Tennis Tournament.
Friday opened up with Omaha winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles for an early 1-0 lead. Fran Tonejc and Tripp Tuff did succeed at No. 3 with a 6-4 decision against Jacob Weber and Yaswanth Mylavarapu.
Fran Tonejc followed up with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Davis Lawley at No. 4 singles to even the match. Omaha (10-15) went back ahead with a win at No. 1 singles.
At No. 3, Boris Spanjaard ignited the Blue Demon run by taking down Hugo Piles Ballester 6-3, 7-6(7-2). Tripp Tuff gave the "Band of Brothers" its first lead of the day with a 7-6(7-5), 6-1 victory over Omaha's Ethan Henry in the No. 6 position.
Christopher Casati delivered the "game-set-match" with his 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 comeback win against the Mavericks' Abdoul Ouattara in the No. 2 slot.
Luuk Wassenaar made it four in a row after prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Alvaro Quintana.
Outgoing graduate students Casati, Spanjaard, Fran Tonejc and Tamas Zador along with team manager Dawid Dabrowski were honored in a post-match ceremony.
The Blue Demons are back in action next Friday for the BIG EAST Championships at Cayce, S.C. after advancing to the conference semifinals the last four years the tournament was held including the title match in 2018.
