Shooting for fifth-straight appearance in conference semifinals
CHICAGO – Once again, DePaul heads into the BIG EAST Men's Tennis Championship with the most prominent target on its back.
The Blue Demons were seeded No. 1 by the league's coaches for the third time in the last four conference tournaments and will open the postseason against No. 8 Georgetown in Friday's quarterfinals.
First serve is 12 p.m. at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
Coach Matt Brothers' team was the top seed in 2017 and 2018, advancing to the conference title match in 2018 and the semifinals in 2017.
This time, the Blue Demons are ready to justify the high regard of opposing coaches after reaching the semifinals of the last four BIG EAST Championships.
DePaul (12-6) would love nothing better than to put away a fourth consecutive win on Friday. Their impressive resume includes a 4-2 victory over Northern Illinois which was ranked nationally for several weeks after opening the season with 10-straight wins.
After the Huskies were toppled March 6 at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness, they won their next seven matches and finished 21-2.
Brothers also prepped his team for the postseason by taking on nationally ranked Notre Dame, Western Michigan and Middle Tennessee State.
The linchpin of his singles lineup is Vito Tonejc at the No. 1 position with an 11-5 record this season including 9-5 at the most challenging spot.
Tripp Tuff has been exactly that with a 12-6 mark while Luuk Wassenaar is 9-6, Boris Spanjaard 9-7 and Fran Tonejc 8-7. Tuff, Wassenaar and Spanjaard have all won three in a row.
Spanjaard and Christopher Casati bring an 11-4 doubles mark into the postseason. Wassenaar and Vito Tonejc are 5-3.
Vito Tonejc is the only BIG EAST tennis player to be honored as the Oracle/ITA National Player of the Week. He also won the BIG EAST Athlete of the Week award.
Most recently, Spanjaard was honored as the BIG EAST Athlete of the Week on April 15 after going 4-0 in singles and doubles the previous week.
Georgetown is accompanied by a 1-2 record with a victory over Howard and losses to Villanova and Loyola Maryland.
Among the other BIG EAST title contenders, No. 2 seed St. John's brings an impressive 14-1 record to South Carolina with its lone conference match a 7-0 blanking of No. 6 seed Villanova.
Third-seeded Marquette (9-6, 3-1) beat DePaul 4-3 on Feb. 28 in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles' conference loss came to No. 4 seed Butler.
The Bulldogs are 7-7 this season, beating BIG EAST foes Xavier and Marquette and falling 4-3 to DePaul in Indianapolis.
