Blue Demons see six record a hit, Dalgarn throw a strikeout

CHICAGO – Krista Dalgarn threw a complete game shutout and four Blue Demons tallied a multi-hit game as DePaul took game one of Saturday's doubleheader over Creighton at Cacciatore Stadium, 6-0.

DePaul (17-9, 8-1 BIG EAST) reached 10 or more hits for the fifth time this season as Angela Scalzitti, Kate Polucha, Gabby O'Riley and Sklyor Hilger all recorded two hits apiece.

Dalgarn threw six strikeouts and improved to 10-2 on the season with the victory.

The Blue Demons tallied four hits and plated three to get off to a quick start in the first inning as all nine batters came to the plate. Scalzitti recorded a leadoff base hit to get things started before Cothern drew a walk. Brooke Johnson came to bat and tapped in a single to right field to score Scalzitti before advancing to second on the throw with Cothern landing safely at third. At the next at bat, Hilger drove a single right back to the pitcher and plated Cothern. O'Riley came to the plate and knocked an RBI single to left to bring Johnson home and give DePaul a 3-0 lead after one.

Kate Polucha blasted a solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the second to increase the Blue Demons lead to four. Polucha has a team-high seven home runs on the season.

In the bottom of the sixth, Scalzitti drew a leadoff walk and Polucha followed up with a single to left field at the next at bat. Cothern laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners before Johnson reached on a fielding error by the Bluejays shortstop as Scalzitti ran home. Hilger shot a single up the middle to plate Polucha as the Blue Demon lead ballooned to 6-0.

Creighton (13-9, 8-5 BIG EAST) mustered a leadoff hit in the top of the seventh before Dalgarn's fourth strikeout of the day paired with a lineout double play to second slammed the door on a comeback attempt.

DePaul and Creighton meet for game two of Saturday's doubleheader Saturday afternoon before Sunday's series finale scheduled for Noon CT at Cacciatore Stadium.
