Blue Demons blank U. of Chicago 7-0 Friday in Hyde Park

CHICAGO – The win column reached double digits for the DePaul men's tennis team, a worthy accomplishment in this pandemic season with matches being postponed or canceled on a regular basis.

Coach Matt Brothers and his program raised their dual-match record to 10-6 following Friday's 7-0 sweep of the University of Chicago at the Amos Alonzo Stagg tennis courts in Hyde Park.

The Blue Demons got off to a fast start and never looked back.

Luuk Wassenaar and Vito Tonejc led off with a 6-0 doubles victory over Joshua Xu and Sachin Das at No. 2. DePaul's No. 1 tandem of Christopher Casati and Boris Spanjaard clinched the doubles point after defeating Christian Alshon and Jeremy Yuan 6-2. The No. 1 team improved to 10-3 on the season.

The Fran Tonejc/Tripp Tuff duo made it a clean sweep with a 6-2 decision over Bailey Forgus and Biren Reddy.

Singles action opened up with Luuk Wassenaar beating Alex Guzhva 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6. DePaul's No. 1 Vito Tonejc followed with a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set result against Alshon, improving his singles record to a team-best 11-3.

The match clincher came courtesy of Tripp Tuff topping Marek Michulka 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5. Tuff is now 10-6 in the dual-match season.

The team score was 5-0 after Fran Tonejc posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Xu at No. 4 singles. Casati came back to beat Yuan 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 and Spanjaard duplicated his doubles partner's effort with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Das at No. 3.

Next up for the Blue Demons is a Sunday BIG EAST match at Xavier in Cincinnati.
