Johnson brings two runs across with two hits
INDIANAPOLIS – DePaul picked up its fifth consecutive BIG EAST victory on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Butler in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at the Butler Softball Field.
The Blue Demons moved to 20-9 overall on the season and 11-1 in league play while Butler is 16-17-1 and 6-9-1 in the BIG EAST.
In a low-scoring affair, both teams registered just three hits. Sophomore Brooke Johnson led the way for the Blue Demons with two hits and two RBI. Kate Polucha registered a base hit, drew a walk and score one run.
In the top of the fourth, DePaul reached base for the first time all day as Polucha drew a walk. At the next at bat, Jessica Cothern laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Polucha into scoring position. Johnson brought Polucha across the plate with a RBI single to shallow left field to give DePaul a 1-0 lead.
Johnson widened DePaul's lead in the top of the 7th inning with a solo home run over the left field wall. The sophomore has five homers on the season.
Krista Dalgarn threw a complete game shutout and picked up her 11th win of the season in the circle. Dalgarn allowed just three hits and struckout two batters.
DePaul and Butler will meet for game two of Saturday's doubleheader this afternoon before the series finale on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
