
DePaul Tops Butler 5-1 Behind Four-Run Seventh Inning

Blue Demons rally to sweep Saturday doubleheader
INDIANAPOLIS – After trailing 1-0 through the first five innings, DePaul rallied to score five runs in the final two frames to sweep Saturday's doubleheader against Butler.
Five different Blue Demons tallied a hit in game two with Brooke Johnson recording her second multi-hit game of the day to go along with an RBI double. Jessica Cothern recorded a two RBI single while Kate Polucha and Nicole Sullivan pushed a run across the plate.
In the circle, Natalie Halvorson secured her eighth win of the season in a complete-game victory. Halvorson hurled seven strikeouts and allowed zero walks.
Butler (16-18-1, 6-10-1 BIG EAST) jumped on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Lauren Fey reached base on a leadoff single and stole second to move into scoring position. Mackenzie Griman singled down the left field line to bring Fey across and put Butler in front, 1-0.
DePaul (21-9, 12-1 BIG EAST) put two runners aboard in the top of the third as Angela Scalzitti and Cothern reached base on consecutive walks but could not be advanced.
The Blue Demons held the threatening Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bri Avery laid down a leadoff bunt before Lauren Fey reached on a bunt of her own. Both runners advanced on a DePaul throwing error before Nicole Sullivan threw home to Jessica Cothern to tag Avery out at home.
In the top of the sixth inning, Jessica Cothern reached base on a leadoff walk before Brooke Johnson sent a base hit through the right side to put runners on first and second. Maranda Gutierrez advanced pinch runner Erin Hocker to third and Johnson to second on a successful sacrifice bunt. Nicole Sullivan brought Hocker home to tie the game on a sacrifice fly to center field.
DePaul put up four runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the lead for good. Tori Meyer drew a leadoff walk before Skylor Hilger knocked a base hit into shallow right field to put runners on first and second. Scalzitti loaded the bases with her second walk of the day. Polucha sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score Grace Frazier and put DePaul in front 2-1. At the next at bat, Hilger stole third and Scalzitti advanced to second on the throw before Cothern singled down the right field line to bring both runners home and make it a 4-1 ball game. Johnson smacked a double to center field to trade places with Cothern and widen the DePaul advantage to 5-1.
Halvorson and Co. retired the Butler batters in order in the bottom of the seventh to claim the victory.
DePaul and Butler will meet for the series finale on Sunday with first pitch set for 11 a.m. CT
