DePaul drops first home contest of the season
CHICAGO – Despite an outstanding effort by graduate student Eral Penn, DePaul men's basketball dropped its first home contest of the season to Texas A&M, 82-66, Friday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. Penn notched his third double-double of the season with a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds as DePaul moves to 3-3 on the season.
It was the second time Penn led the Blue Demons in both scoring and rebounding this season, while Umoja Gibson notched a career-high 10 assists. Gibson was joined by Javan Johnson and Ahamad Bynum to round out the four players in double-digit scoring.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Texas A&M (4-2) came out firing from the beginning, making four of their first five field goals for a 10-5 lead. Despite getting good looks, DePaul couldn't get a shot to fall. A&M extended to as large as a 12-point lead before Ahamad Bynum fired four-consecutive points to pull within seven.
Facing an 11-point halftime deficit, DePaul shot better from the floor in the second half but couldn't gain ground on A&M. The Aggies distanced themselves early with two field-goals and two made free throws, 44-29. With a little over 13 minutes left, Johnson notched back-to-back three-pointers after being held scoreless in the first half. Johnson's quick six points brough the game within nine, 49-40, but DePaul wasn't able to further dig into the lead.
