Teams combine for 28 made three-pointers
CHICAGO – Led by a three-point barrage, the DePaul men's basketball team outlasted Samford, 103-98, in a thrilling overtime win Wednesday evening at Wintrust Arena. The Blue Demons totaled 18 made three-point field goals, the most for a DePaul team since at least the 1995-96 season.
Javan Johnson led all scorers with a career-high 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Johnson recorded a career-high three-pointers, going 6-of-8 from deep, in addition to four blocks. He was one of four DePaul players who registered a career-high scoring night, joined by Da'Sean Nelson (18), Philmon Gebrewhit (16) and Zion Cruz (9).
Samford (6-3) was led by Logan Dye with 23 points and seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a fast-paced, back-and-forth first half, DePaul took a narrow 50-49 advantage at halftime. Johnson's hot hand continued out of halftime with the first bucket for either team. The Blue Demons went on an 8-0 run early in the second half for a 60-52 lead, in what would prove to be the difference maker.
Samford would not be put away, pulling within one possession on seven different occasions before taking a 73-72 lead with just under eight minutes left. Never down by more than one, DePaul's red hot offense continued in part due to six-consecutive made free throws. With DePaul up five late in the period, Samford completed a three-point play and forced a turnover under their own basket pushing the game to overtime.
DePaul trailed by three early in the overtime period before a pair of three-pointers by Johnson and Gibson gave the Blue Demons the separation they needed. After giving up seven three-pointers to Samford in the first half, DePaul held the Bulldogs to just three in the second and overtime periods.
