DePaul claims series victory over Villanova despite dropping Sunday's series finale
CHICAGO — DePaul could not withstand a pair of big innings from Villanova on Sunday afternoon as the Blue Demons dropped the series finale 11-3 at Cacciatore Stadium.
The middle of the lineup was responsible for the production as DePaul saw just four hits with one apiece from Nicole Sullivan, Tori Meyer, Anna Wohlers and Riley Pool.
Sophomore pitcher Julyana Gomez made her first start in the circle and fell to 0-1 with the setback after three and a third inning on four hits and three earned runs. Erin Hocker and Sarah Lehman also saw action in relief with Lehman firing five punchouts while also surrendering five runs.
The Wildcats hung six runs on the board on eight hits in the top of the fourth inning to open up a 6-0 lead. The Blue Demons responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to four runs as Sullivan, Meyer and Wohlers all reached on consecutive doubles.
DePaul (13-18, 3-6 BIG EAST) saw chances in the bottom of the sixth but could only plate one run. Wohlers reached on an error before Pool drew a walk and Gutierrez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one gone. Carly Alvers was inserted into the lineup as pinch hitter and sent a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Wohlers around. Johnson was walked for the third time on the outing to juice the base paths once again but a lineout to third ended the inning and threatening chances for the Blue Demons.
Villanova (15-19, 4-4) piled on five more runs on five hits in the top half of the seventh inning to take a 11-3 advantage for good.
Despite a pair of walks in the seventh, the Blue Demons rally fell short.
DePaul returns to action on Wednesday, April 6 with a short trip to UIC for a midweek matchup with the Flames. First pitch from Flames Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
