The Blue Demons Bring Home their First BIG EAST Win of the Season

INDIANAPOLIS – DePaul women's soccer brought home a win Sunday afternoon after defeating Butler, 2-1. The Blue Demons capitalized on an early lead after making two connections in the first half.

"It was really great that we were able to come out strong and score two goals in the first 25 minutes of the game," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "That really set the tone for us and was key to winning the match. In the second half Butler really put the pressure on, but we were defensively strong and absorbed a lot of pressure. We stuck to our game plan for the full 90 minutes and I am just really proud of the team for their commitment and passion today."

Butler (5-5-4, 1-1-3 BIG EAST) came into the game firing away. The Bulldogs managed to put up five attempts within the first ten minutes of the game, but DePaul's Elena Milam, with the help of the backline, held off all of Butler's advances. Once DePaul (5-5-2, 1-3-1 BIG EAST) got control of the ball, a cross by Freya Jupp to Beth Smyth ended in the Blue Demon's first goal of the game in the 13th minute.

The celebration for DePaul continued into the 16th minute, when Jupp saw an opportunity and made a connection from a distance, scoring her first goal of the season and furthering the Blue Demons' lead. DePaul entered the second half up 2-0.

In the last 45 minutes, Butler laid on the pressure in search of an answer to DePaul's two goals. Ellie Mink, Danielle Fjeldsted and Lea Eisenring proved to be a great threat to the Bulldogs disassembling many attempts to make a clean shot in midfield. Butler was unable to respond before the end of the match and DePaul went home victorious for their first BIG EAST win of the season.

UP NEXT: The Blue Demons play host to UConn, Thursday, Oct. 12 for a 3 p.m. matchup.
