DePaul Wraps Up Day Two in Arizona
2/18/2023 11:09:00 PM | SOFTBALL
Blue Demons fall to BYU, No. 22 Arizona State on Saturday
Â
Facing the stiffest competition the squad has seen on the young season, the Blue Demons couldn't keep up with the offensive firepower as DePaul was outhit 25-11 between the two setbacks.
Â
Nicole Sullivan went four-for-six (.667) on the day with a pair of extra-base hits in a triple and three-run home run against the Cougars while crossing the plate twice. Brooke Johnson totaled a pair of hits including a solo home run against BYU in addition to reaching base on a walk. Addison Talbot was three-for-six (.500) on Saturday including the lone base hit for the Blue Demons in the five-inning loss at the hands of the Sun Devils.
Â
In the circle, Bella Nigey and Abbey Pochie both received starts against BYU and Arizona State, respectively. Nigey surrendered nine earned runs on eight hits while Pochie allowed six runs on seven hits. In a pair of relief appearances, Brenna Smith threw 4.2 innings and gave way to seven hits and a trio of earned runs. Katey Pierce saw an inning and two-thirds of action against the Cougars and gave up two runs and three hits.
Â
Game 1 – BYU 13, DePaul 7
The Cougars used a three-hit, five-run first inning to jump in front early and never look back. However, the Blue Demons responded promptly as Sullivan sent a home run to left field to score Baylee Cosgrove, a leadoff walk, and Riley Pool, a base knock to left, which cut the deficit to just two. BYU widened its lead to 9-3 with four runs in the bottom of the third while extending the advantage to eight runs on a two-run home run to left center.
Â
DePaul wouldn't go away quietly though, scoring four runs on four hits and a pair of BYU errors in the top of the fifth inning. Johnson led off the frame with a solo homer to center before Anna Wohlers, Sullivan and Talbot all recorded base hits followed by an Alexis Houge walk to load the bases. Tori Meyer reached on an error which scored two more for the Blue Demons bringing the visiting squad with four runs, 11-7. BYU tacked on two more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Â
Sullivan notched a leadoff triple in the seventh but nothing else followed for the Blue Demons.
Â
Game 2 – No. 22 Arizona State 8, DePaul 0 (Five Innings)
Much like the first game of the day, the Sun Devils used a big inning in the early going of the contest to set the tone and set the Blue Demons back 6-0 after two innings. In total, just three DePaul batters saw the base paths as Baylee Cosgrove was hit by a pitch in the second inning, designated player Payton Viles drew a walk in the third and Talbot knocked a base hit into center field in the fifth to ward off a no-hitter.
Â
A two-run homer in the fourth inning pushed the Arizona State lead to eight and all but secured the victory for the 22nd-ranked program.

Up Next
The Blue Demons will close out their stay in the desert on Sunday with a matchup against Portland State slated for 10:30 a.m. CT on the campus of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.Â
